Google+ Can Succeed at Business Without Really Trying

Google+ arrived last summer armed and ready to compete with Facebook. Yet despite more than 100 million users, the network has failed to slow Facebook’s growth or diminish its market share.
Many have already dismissed Google+ as a failed venture, but it would be premature to write off the network as a social experiment gone awry. Just as Gmail was key to Google’s enterprise play, Google+ is fast becoming the enterprise social networking tool of choice for savvy office workers.
The consumerization of IT certainly plays a role in this. In fact, a Forrester study found that the market for enterprise social collaboration is projected to increase tenfold in the next four years as more traditional services like video conferencing decline. Tools that succeed in this new era will combine communication and collaboration services with social features in much the way G+ does.
This is why G+ truly is Google’s enterprise Trojan horse. As Microsoft Office 365 becomes a viable competitor to Google Apps, G+ is what separates the two cloud-based services. The following are some of the features that make G+ a great tool for social enterprise collaboration.

Circles

If you’re familiar with G+, you’re aware of the Circles feature, which allows users to easily segment followers into different groups. That’s a particularly powerful concept in enterprise because a company can create Circles for various departments, clients, partners, and more.
Circles compartmentalize relationships, help save time, and provide a company with a targeted approach to content sharing. By the way, Circles can be shared, so if you just hired a new sales exec, he or she can gain instant and personalized access to your client base.
In the IT department, admins can create custom organizational units and then add users to the appropriate units, depending on what a company wants a given user to have access to. To make it even more useful Google should consider adding the ability to sync organizational units with G+ Circles, which would save time and effort for admins and end users.

Hangouts

As a whole, Google Apps is cutting costs for enterprise IT. Hangouts further reduces those costs because it can be used for anything from an impromptu meeting with your satellite office to a customer demo.
Admins should consider eliminating pricey web conferencing services and implement a company-wide Hangout policy for web meetings. For this to happen on a large scale, Google should consider Hangouts integration with Google Voice and the ability to dial into a Hangout via a phone line, much like with traditional web conferencing services.

Google Docs

Google Docs is an amazing Google Apps feature. The tool not only provides word processing and editing capabilities, but allows you to share your work and collaborate in real-time with co-workers and other business colleagues.
This March, Google integrated Google Docs into Hangouts, making word processing truly social. Users can now update documents with co-workers who may be on the other side of the world, all while feeling like everyone is working in the same room.

Search Functions

The new Search Plus Your World feature added to Google’s search function has received its share of criticism. In reality, it has a lot to offer from a brand marketing perspective. With G+’s integration into Google Apps, employees were given the chance to create separate personal and work networks.
Circles may have helped separate work life from personal life, but G+ for employees actually lets workers brand their pages in the company’s image. It makes for great marketing. Every time an employee +1s or shares, it’s another impression for your business.
It would be great to see G+ give users the ability to switch back and forth between work and personal accounts from the same login. This would help speed user adoption, with professional users creating personal accounts and vice versa.

Organic Connections

As with any social network, G+ is a great way to organically build connections that can be meaningful for your career. Check out who your co-workers are following and add them to your Circles. This could lead to idea sharing, a new sale, or even a partnership. Plus, if you’re new to the company, you can quickly get the lay of the land by following important influencers in your company and industry.
That said, creating and maintaining Circles can be tedious. A nice addition by Google would be an opt-in auto-suggest service to populate and create Circles.

Google Search Changes From March by SagarGanatra

Google has rolled out a great number of small changes to the search engine and UI over the last month, and now they have rolled them all into a big blog post for your consecutive enjoyment.
We’ve highlighted a few that seemed more relevant, but there isn’t much here that’s life-changing. All the same, it’s good to stay up on changes like this, just in case you happen to do SEO for a living (scoundrel).
  • “+” is now treated as a normal character when that seems to be the intent, along with %, $, \, ., @, and #. Its days as an operator are probably over, though, except when you’re using it in an equation.
  • Changing your password now logs you out from all your Google stuff, including Search.
  • Better answers and live scores for Tennis, Russian Hockey, and UEFA Champions League games.
  • Platform-specific results for app search – so if you search for Angry Birds, you’ll get different results on Android, iOS, and so on. Results are also richer, with stars, download buttons, and so on.
  • The “Freshness” update that brought recent and differently-organized results to News searches has been rolled out more generally, apparently as a result of having acquired the “machine resources” to do so.
  • Image search has gotten a handful up updates, including relevancy, better ratings for the quality of the source page (fewer trash pages Google-bombing with popular images, presumably), and Safesearch changes.
  • The +1 button will show in search results in more countries and domains.

Earn Money With Blogspot by SagarGanatra

If you find yourself attracted to a career in blogging, then you’ve probably asked Google about whether you can earn money with Blogspot. While the search engine doesn’t provide a concrete answer – the truth is, yes, you can.Take note that while we are discussing about the earning potential of this particular platform, our focus is on the .blogspot variety, rather than those who merely employ the platform to post and publish new posts. WordPress is another great example of such a platform, where you may similarly use a .wordpress web address, or just use it as a content management system (CMS). FYI – this blog runs WordPress, and I don’t plan to switch any time soon.
Understanding the difference between using Blogspot as your hosting provider and using it as a CMS is essential. You can read more about it in here – Domain Name And Hosting Tips For Your First Blog.
Now, let’s look at the monetization options with this particular blogging platform.

Methods To Earn Money

  • Google Adsense
As always, Google Adsense is your best bet to earn some money from your Blogspot blog. Since both these platforms are provided by the Internet behemoth (Google), you can expect some neat and convenient integration here. All you have to do is to sign up for an Adsense account, and put you ad script in at the desired locations.
When doing so, it’s important to study user habits. If a visitor tends to visit page B before page A, it is a good idea to monetize page B better. Not all users will even reach page A, let alone click ads there. This is just a simple example, using web Analytics is important to understand deeper usage patterns and trends.
Without a doubt – Google Adsense is, and will be, your number 1 option.
  • The Amazon Affiliates Program
Anyone who has been on the Internet for long enough knows that Amazon forms the central hub of all shopping that is done online.  It offers pretty much everything, and what’s even better is that it ships most products worldwide.
The Amazon Affiliates program allows you to sign up with the site and promote their products. If somebody buys a product after clicking on a promotion on your site, you get a commission for that sale. To help you sell their products, the company offers various options that are very effective to attract buyers. I can personally vouch for its effectiveness.
  • Other Affiliate Programs
Amazon is not the only choice when you are an Indian looking to make money online. You can sign up on the many options out there that include Commission Junction, Clickbank, etc. Here you will find products ranging from ladies shoes, to even automated Twitter bots.
But remember – it’s important to first understand how these services work before you choose to market any product. You might earn nothing with a certain product, while another blogger might make a few lakhs. Don’t worry though, I’ll follow this post up with some guides detailing how to chose an affiliate program. In the meanwhile, you can always let know of any questions you may have in the comments below.

Disadvantages Of Blogging With Blogspot

Using this CMS for blogging certainly has its disadvantages. Primary among them is that fact that if you don’t have a domain name of your own, people tend to not take you seriously. It’s just how the Internet works. Imagine the effectiveness of this blog if I’d chosen to go with bloggingindia.blogspot.com. Doesn’t sound very credible now does it?
It can get especially difficult to convince people to buy things that you recommend when you opt for free hosting. Therefore, don’t get disheartened by the lackluster response at first, it will grow and I’ll help you do just that. :)
Another issue many people have with this platform is the fact that it isn’t as flexible as WordPress, Joomla and Drupal. While you can make a few changes, if you really want to create a unique user experience, this shouldn’t be your hosting provider and CMS of choice.
Remember though – as a beginner, it’s important to start with minimal complications. Spend a good 2-4 months experimenting with this beginner’s platform. You can always automatically redirect your audience to a unique domain name once you’re ready to go big in the blogosphere.
When you’re trying to get people to click on advertisements online, it is important to provide a comfortable user experience. If you just push ads in every blank space on your page, your visitors would not only NOT click them, they probably will not return to your blog.
As always let me know about any queries you may have in the comments below. I hope this post has helped to answer.

Resume Tips for Technology Professionals By SagarGanatra

Everyone can use a little help with their resume, especially if they’re pursuing a career in a highly technical field. These ten tips can help tech professionals optimize their resumes in order to nab that great gig.
Do you have a foolproof tip for a technical resume? Let us know in the comments.

1. Understand Attention Spans

Keep in mind that people read resumes about halfway down the page/screen before deciding if they are going to continue reading, save it for later or hit the delete button. Anything marketable about you should be in the top third of the resume.

2. Make It an Appropriate Length

The optimal length of the resume will depend on your experience. A person with a single year’s experience and a four-page resume is in trouble, as is a person with 10 years experience and a one-page resume. Be concise and try to fit your resume into three pages. Need to cut down? You don’t need an objective — it’s a waste of precious space, unless you are a career changer.

3. General Summaries Bad, Technical Summaries Good

General summaries can help if used sparingly and appropriately. Technical summaries are more helpful, because the first person reading your resume could be non-technical and only knowledgeable enough to look for keywords. However, there should not be a laundry list of every technology you have ever heard about.

4. Dates Matter

Be clear about your dates of employment. Most companies want to see months, not just years — especially if you have some jumps or if you are currently unemployed (i.e. they want to see how long you have been out). It’s better to be upfront than to make them guess.

5. Highlight Accomplishments, Not Just Job Functions

The descriptions of your positions should ideally be a mix of a broad overview and specific accomplishments. That way, recruiters will know what you did day-to-day, but also what effect your activities had on the overall company or department.

6. Quality Writing Still Matters

Long-winded paragraphs or bullets are mind numbing, but short choppy sentences can appear simplistic. The ideal resume should have a combination of short paragraphs and bullets — or even just bullets. If you opt for bullets, combine related activities into one bullet where appropriate to save room.

7. Use Action Verbs

The most overused phrases on resumes are “responsible for” or “participated in.” It’s hard to know if you were just a bystander or a true contributor or even a leader on a project. It’s okay to use these terms once or twice, but it’s much better to use something like “managed,” “completed,” “administered,” “developed,” etc. If you are having trouble coming up with action verbs, Thesaurus.com should be your new best friend.

8. There Are No Rules About Education Placement

Education placement is variable. If you went to a particularly good school, have an advanced degree or have a very relevant degree to the types of roles you are pursuing, then it might be worth putting at the top, but it’s okay for education to be at the bottom, too.
The same applies for certifications — but if you have many, then it might consume too much space at the top. Assuming your resume has the experience to back up the certifications, your prospective employer will be intrigued enough to get to them at the end.

9. People are Not That Interested in Interests

The ubiquitous “Interests” section isn’t really necessary; however, if there’s something you are particularly proud of and it’s short, then feel free to include it at the end of your resume. There is always the possibility that when you put “competitive running” on your resume that the person reading your resume is a marathoner and gives you an interview for that reason. However, you should exclude any activities that could be seen as overly political or offensive.

10. Be Prepared With A Versatile Resume Template

Sometimes it’s valuable to have more than one version of your resume. For example, if your background could be applicable to manager or individual contributor positions, you don’t want to scare someone off with a heavy manager resume for a contributor role or vice versa. However, you should not make yourself crazy writing a new resume for every position that comes up (an especially tempting habit if you are unemployed).
You should develop a resume template you feel comfortable with, and then make minor tweaks if necessary. Also, be sure to update your resume annually to avoid having to revamp it in a panic when you really need it.

Facebook Brand Pages Are Good for Businesses Reasons by SagarGanatra

Christian Taylor  developer of the number one Facebook e-commerce platform for brands, agencies and merchants, and the world’s only Facebook Shopping Mall.
Not everyone is cheering over the recent switch to Facebook Timeline for businesses. But the reality is, the new layout will present many great opportunities, particularly if companies properly use it to merchandise their products. So be afraid, if you must, but then check out the three reasons why Facebook’s new brand pages will benefit sellers and social commerce as a whole.

1. It Encourages Fresh Content and Active Conversation

With the new Timeline, business pages now look and behave like personal profile pages. This means a Facebook storefront can no longer be the landing page for new visitors using the old “default tab” setting. While this was useful to ensure more visibility for the storefront, it was also a crutch for not actively creating fresh content, which is the most effective way to drive new traffic to the store.
With the new Timeline layout, building exposure for the storefront and its products will rely on frequently posting promotions and deals. While a post can be “pinned” at the top of the Timeline for up to seven days, smart sellers will create a daily posting plan to develop continuous awareness with their fans. Better yet, they will look for ways to actively encourage comments on their posts by asking questions, creating polls, or publishing other content designed to provoke responses and make their stream an active discussion forum.

2. It Provides a Richer Canvas for Seller Expression

The new Facebook pages give sellers more real estate to showcase their brand and products, starting with the cover photo. While there are some content limitations for the cover photo, it is a really great way to attract new visitors and engage current fans with a core brand message. The ideal dimension for a cover photo is 850 pixels wide by 315 pixels tall, and it’s a good idea to create several for regular rotation.
Storefront applications will also be a more visible part of the page. The old tabs on the left of the page have been replaced by a large 111 pixel by 74 pixel icon that can be placed just under the cover photo. This icon is automatically filled by the storefront application, but the seller has the option to create a custom icon.
The new application canvas for the storefront will also play a larger part. All of the profile information that used to be on the left of the page will move to the top, allowing sellers to deliver an 810 pixel wide experience for shoppers instead of the previous 520 pixels wide. This means more products above the fold, or larger product photos, or both.

3. It Offers Deeper Engagement Insights and Tools

The older version of Facebook Insights did not deliver real-time data, so it could take up to two days to get analytics on a post. With the new Insights, sellers can now track how a post is doing within five to ten minutes after publishing, allowing them to immediately tweak their posts depending on how they are performing. Sellers can then immediately amplify the reach of well-performing posts by turning them into a premium ad or a sponsored story. Some other new or enhanced metrics include:
  • People Talking About Engagement: This is the total number of people that have engaged in any way with your page, including users liking your page, commenting on or sharing a post from your page, or answering a question you’ve asked on your page. Sellers can use this to measure engagement with their brand across all Facebook activities and track the success of their programs beyond “likes” and clicks.
  • Friends of Fans: This is the total number of friends all your fans have. Sellers can use this to track the growing (or declining) influence of their fan base. As the average goes up, so does the potential reach for a seller’s campaign or promotion.
  • Reach: This is the total number of people who have seen content associated with your page. Understanding how far and wide messages are traveling will enable sellers to optimize their content to generate maximum reach.
  • Virality: This is the percentage of people who saw a story from your Page and “talked about it.” Again, knowing what’s being shared can help sellers assess what is actually of interest to their fans and customers.
